Carroll men's, women's golf teams lower scores on Day 2 at championships

HELENA, Mont. -- Samuel Berry led a Carroll College Fighting Saints charge of improvement on Day Two of the Frontier Conference Golf Championship on Tuesday in Phoenix, Arizona.

"We were a little bit better off the tee," Saints coach Ben MacIntyre said. "These desert courses you don't want to be hitting off the dirt. You want to find grass to have success. We'll try to get everybody in the right frame of mind tonight and finish right."

The championship is being played at Papago Golf Course.

Berry shaved five strokes off his opening round score on Tuesday. The sophomore from Billings, Montana, shot a three-over-par, 75. It tied for the third lowest round on Tuesday and helped Berry crack the Top 10. He sits in a tie for eighth with a two-round total of 155.

Montana Tech's Sean Benson continues to lead the men with a two-round score of 141.

Nearly every other Saints men's golfer lowered their scores, too.

Ben Gardner, a senior from Snohomish, Washington, posted an 80 on Day 2 to match his opening round of 80. He's in 18th.

Joseph Potkonjak, a junior from Bigfork, Montana, subtracted four strokes with a second round score of 79 (162 total) to put him in a tie for 20th.

Stephen Santora, a senior from Napa, California, lowered his score by three, shooting an 80 on Tuesday after opening with an 83 to begin the championship. Santora sits in a tie for 22nd.

Josh Neth, a freshman from Belgrade, Montana, also bettered his opening round by three strokes, improving from a 90 down to an 87. He's in 27th going into Round Three.

The Saints men improved their score the most of any team on Day Two, dropping 12 shots from their first-round total. Overall the men sit at fifth after two rounds complete with a total team score of 640.  Carroll trails the leader, Rocky Mountain College, by 31 strokes with one round left to play.

The Carroll women saw some improvement, too, in their second round.

Caroline Hobson, a freshman from Hillsboro, Oregon, made the biggest moves on Tuesday, bettering her first round by seven strokes with a 90. She sits in 18th with a two-round total of 187.

Sydnee Nowlen, a sophomore from Missoula, Montana, shot a steady 93 to match her first-day output. She sits in a tie for 16th to lead the Saints on the individual board.

Weslee Nehl, a sophomore from Helena, Montana, also mirrored her first round, shooting a 95 in the second round. She sits in a tie for 21st with teammates Cailin Spencer, a junior from Mead, Washington who dropped six strokes off her opening round to shoot a 92 on Tuesday.

Nehl and Spencer both have a total of 190.

Madison Robischon, a junior from Townsend, Montana, sits in 25th with a two-round total of 201.

Rocky Mountain's Eryn Ellis leads the tournament at nine-over-par, 153.
