Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | ERIK C. ANDERSON, CARROLL SPORTS INFORMATION

Carroll advances to 4th consecutive Frontier championship, beats Tech 81-64

HELENA, Mont. -- The return of Matt Wyman, paired with five Saints scoring in double figures powered No. 9 Carroll College past Montana Tech, 81-64, in the semifinals of the Frontier Conference Playoffs on Saturday in the PE Center.

Carroll advanced to its fourth consecutive Frontier Conference title game.

Match Burnham led all scorers with a big double-double of 21 points and 14 rebounds. For good measure, he added four blocks, two assists and two steals.

The Saints knocked down 12-of-21 three-pointers (57 percent) and overall used a rested and well-calibrated offensive game to thwart a very physical Montana Tech defense.

"They just get out and pressure you so much," Saints coach Kurt Paulson told Sports 94.9. "We had to do a different entry to our offense, shortening those passes."

The Saints built up a 26-13 lead with six minutes remaining in the first half, appearing as though the semifinal contest would become a laugher, but Tech fought back.

The Orediggers closed the half on a 17-4 run to knot the game up at 30 right before halftime.

The Saints tussled with Tech in the second half, before building up a double-digit lead, thanks in part to its gritty defense and timely shooting. Carroll pressed Tech the entire game.

"We wanted to speed this game, they wanted to slow it down," Paulson said. "That's why we stayed in (press defense) the whole time."

The result was a lead that swelled to as many as 20 points.

Joining Burnham in double figures were Matt Wyman (16 points, four assists) -- who played for the first time since Feb. 1, after nursing an injured knee -- Shamrock Campbell (14 points) and Ife Kalejaiye and Jovan Sljivancanin, whom both finished with 12.

"Jovan and Match and Matt hit some big shots," Paulson said. "Those are our bigs, but they can all shoot. We pulled (the opposing frontcourt) out from the inside and then those guys had open looks from three on penetration."

The No. 1-seeded Saints will face No. 2-seed Lewis-Clark State on Tuesday in the Frontier championship. LCSC defeated Montana State-Northern 95-53 in the other semifinal on Saturday.

Carroll split the regular season title with Lewis-Clark State, but received the No. 1-seed after winning the regular season series 2-1.

The Warriors will enter the championship on a 10-game winning streak.

"They're deep and they're hot," Paulson said. "The last games they lost were the Carroll, Rocky sweep. That was a while ago. They're playing well. We need to lock in on them right away. We're at home and it'd be great to get a good crowd in here."

The game tips off at 7 p.m. on Tuesday in the PE Center.

Tickets will go on sale on Monday at 9 a.m.
