HELENA, Mont. -- The Carroll College softball team fell twice to No. 16 Corban on Friday in Hillsboro, Oregon, to open up Cascade Collegiate Conference play.
Carroll (2-3, 0-2 CCC) traded blows with the Warriors in the first game, grabbing 1-0 and then 2-1 leads in the first few innings, thanks to an Ali Williams sacrifice fly and then a
Kendall Mooney RBI double.
But Corban (8-4, 2-0) grabbed a 5-2 lead after the third inning and never looked back.
The Saints earned one more run in the fourth inning, when
Tianna Sell hit a solo-shot homer, but Corban padded its lead with two more runs in the bottom of the inning.
Corban only out-hit the Saints 8-7, but made more of its opportunities.
Sarah Probasco (4-1) got the win on the mound for the Warriors.
In the second game, Corban took its lead in the fourth inning and cruised, while the Saints hit into double-plays.
The Saints were stung by untimely hitting, knocking the ball into a double-play in the first inning after two Saints singled to get on base. In the second inning, the game still knotted at zero, the Saints again gave up two outs on a single play. Mooney and
Megan McCormick led off with singles before a fly out led to Mooney being thrown out at home.
Corban took its 4-0 lead in the bottom of the second and then in the third inning, the Saints hit into another double-play.
Top of the fourth, the Saints put another runner on before hitting into yet another double-play.
That was the end of the Saints' scoring threat.
Carroll out-hit Corban in the second game 6-5.
Amber Brewer led the Saints' bats on the day, hitting 5-for-6.
Carroll and Corban will finish out the three-game series Saturday, and follow it up with a fourth non-conference game.
