THREE-PEAT: No. 7 Carroll College wins third consecutive Frontier championship

HELENA, Mont. -- Match Burnham scorched the nets and then the Fighting Saints cut 'em down.

Burnham scored a game-high 33 points and for the third consecutive regular season the Carroll College Saints cut down the nets to punctuate a championship season. No. 7 Carroll disposed of Rocky Mountain College 84-72 on Saturday in the PE Center on Senior Night.

"I thought the team played really well in the second half," Saints coach Kurt Paulson told Sports 94.9 " I'm really proud of Dane Wrap. He's getting hounded down the stretch. He's been frustrated. He hasn't got as many clean looks as he did early in the year. I thought he stepped up tonight when it mattered."

The Saints played a disciplined, highly efficient game to combat Rocky's physicality and athleticism. The Saints had 21 assists on 30 made field goals.

"We had to take care of the ball better," Paulson said. They shared it. We're harder to guard when the ball is moving."

Carroll held a four-point lead at halftime, but the Battlin' Bears tied the game at 47 and then quickly took a three-point lead.

Five more lead changes preceded the Saints going on a 10-0 run to take the lead with under 10 minutes to go. The Saints built a 10-point lead when Shamrock Campbell hit a three-pointer with 7:38 left in the game.

"He ran the team so well," Paulson said. "I'm really happy for him. He's wise beyond his years. I'm happy he chose us. He led us tonight."

Burnham added another three-pointer a minute later and the Saints were fully in control the rest of the way. It was Burnham's fifth game of 31 or more points this season.

Clayton Ladine led the Battlin' Bears with 17 points.

Carroll shot 56 percent from the field, 44 percent from the three-point line and 73 percent from the foul line.

The Saints previously shared the regular season title in 2017 before winning the conference outright last season.

Carroll and Lewis-Clark State ended the season with 13-5 conference records and were co-champions of the Frontier. But by virtue of the Saints' 2-1 season series against the Warriors, Carroll earned the right to host every playoff game it's involved in.

The road to a third consecutive Frontier postseason championship goes through Helena.

Carroll receives a bye in the quarterfinals of the Frontier playoffs. The Saints will host the lowest remaining seed in the semifinals on Saturday, March 2. Tickets go on sale Monday at 9 a.m.

Notes: The Saints honored their seniors -- Match Burnham, Ife Kalejaiye, Matt Wyman and Alejandro Santos Piqueras -- before the game… In a special moment, Paulson started Santos, who is recovering from a torn ACL, and allowed him to step on the court one final time for Senior Night… Battlin' Bears coach Bill Dreikosen and coach Paulson agreed to a dead-ball after the tip to allow Santos to safely exit the game… Paulson said: "I'd like to thank Bill Dreikosen. He agreed to that. I really respect him."
