HELENA, Mont. -- One win and the No. 7 Carroll College Fighting Saints men's basketball team will claim at least a share of the Frontier Conference championship for a third consecutive season.
The Saints (23-5, 12-4 Frontier Conference) hold a two-game lead over No. 13 Lewis-Clark State (22-6, 11-5). One win this week and the Saints assure themselves the right to host every Frontier postseason game they play and at least a split of the regular season championship. Carroll holds a 2-1 advantage over LCSC in the regular season.
Two wins and the Saints would be outright champions.
First, the Saints have to take care of Montana Tech and Rocky Mountain College one more time.
The Saints travel to Tech on Thursday to face an Orediggers (15-13, 5-11) team that's lost five consecutive games. Carroll holds a 2-0 edge over the Orediggers so far this season, winning by an average margin of 13 points.
The Orediggers have not won since Jan. 29 against Montana Western, though the majority of those losses came on the road.
Carroll, meanwhile, has battled through injuries and illness to maintain its top place in the Frontier. The Saints have won three of their past four, all without senior starter
Matt Wyman.
Stepping up in his place have been a combination of Saints.
Match Burnham poured in 31 points last week against Montana State-Northern, while freshman guard
Jovan Sljivancanin grabbed a career-high 18 rebounds and posted a double-double of 19-18 to help the Saints fend off Providence. Sljivancanin's efforts earned him player of the week honors this past weekend.
Even through the waves of adversity, the Saints have kept a top form. Carroll is ranked No. 1 in three-point percentage (43), field goal percentage (53) and free-throw percentage (82).
On Saturday, the Saints will return to the PE Center to take on Rocky Mountain College. Carroll and Rocky have split the first two games of the series so far this season.
After enduring a three-game skid, the Battlin' Bears posted two consecutive wins last week. Rocky has been a different team on the road, though, compiling a 2-5 road record this season.
The last time the Fighting Saints and Battlin' Bears met, Carroll claimed a 69-50 victory in Billings.
Both games tip off at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday and Saturday, respectively.
Carroll will honor seniors Wyman, Burnham,
Ife Kalejaiye and
Alejandro Santos Piqueras on Saturday.
