CHANDLER, Ariz. -- Despite some big shots in the second half, the No. 25-ranked Carroll College Fighting Saints fell short of No. 16 Our Lady of the Lake 72-69 on Wednesday at Chandler-Gilbert Community College in the Frontier Classic.
The Saints of OLLU came out and blitzed Carroll College, using a harassing full-court defense to slow the Saints down.
Kamden Hilborn and Dani Wagner knocked down threes to keep the Saints in it early, but OLLU scored and scored quickly when it had the ball.
It took the Saints until the second quarter to truly find their footing. OLLU led 27-15 after the first period, but CC opened the second quarter on a 10-2 run to nearly equalize the scoreboard.
After giving up 27 points in the first quarter, the CC defense buckled down and allowed just nine points in the second quarter.
The second half, though, turnovers caught up to the Saints. Carroll would record 28 turnovers, struggling to consistently bring the ball up against OLLU's pesky trapping defense.
OLLU took advantage and found its scoring touch again.
Both teams shot similar percentages from the field and deep, but the Saints of Texas used a plus-10 advantage in free throws made to make a difference.
Carroll found ways to generate more possessions with its rebounding. CC outrebounded OLLU 38-27.
Wagner kept the Saints in it, connecting on 11-for-21 shots, including a 5-for-12 mark from the three-point line to finish with 28 points while adding in eight rebounds.
Sienna Swannack added in 17 points.
OLLU had four scorers in double figures led by Kasey Saldana's 17.
The Saints are back in action on Thursday against San Diego Christian at 6 p.m.
