Carroll men's soccer drops match to Rocky, 2-0

Box Score HELENA, Mont. -- The Carroll College men's soccer team fell 2-0 to Rocky Mountain College early Sunday evening.

"We really needed this match. We didn't get it," coach Doug Mello said after the tough loss.

Throughout the first half the ball was moving all over the field with Rocky having nine shots and the Fighting Saints having six. Just minutes before halftime in the 38th minute, Rocky's Sky Swenson fired a shot off a pass from Nolan Sherwood. The ball deflected off the back of a Carroll defender, changing directions and finding its way into the goal.

Carroll assistant coach Vijay Dias spoke on the play saying, "It was a tight game, obviously a good opponent, with a few turning points like that own goal that deflected off our guy right before halftime, it's hard to go down on a team like this because they are good."

The Saints entered halftime down 1-0.

In the second half, both teams ramped up the offensive pressure with Carroll and Rocky having 11 and 12 shots respectively. Early in the second half Pablo Ferrira was able to sneak one in off a corner kick, putting Carroll down 2-0. Carroll got a penalty kick soon after, but the attempt from Rory Bloy went high.

"We really needed this match. We didn't get it. The effort was there, we had our chances, and we missed a PK. With all that and a goalie that was as hot as theirs was, it spells disaster. With the chances we had, if we put a couple of them away, we really should have had a tie at least," Mello said.

Looking forward to next week, the Saints will be preparing to face Providence. A victory will be crucial for any hopes of making the playoffs.

"We really need a victory against Providence to get into the playoffs. We need a good week of practice, we need to put this behind us, and we need to move forward," said Mello.
