HELENA, Mont. -- It took a little longer than the Fighting Saints hoped, but No. 8 Carroll College found its moxie in the fourth quarter and put away Montana Tech on Tuesday, 68-63.Â
Christine Denny had plenty to do with the Saints' (14-4, 6-1 Frontier Conference) clutch performance late, showed in part by her team-high 15 points. Denny, the sophomore from Fairfield, Washington, showed a reinvigorated aggression in the fourth quarter, attacking the basket and making plays on defense.
"We needed to have a good game and bounce back after we lost to (Montana) Western this past weekend," Denny told 406MTSports.com. "Being able to get a win like this against a team like Tech, who is always going to fight, was big time for us."
After the Saints trailed the Orediggers a good portion of the game, it was the fourth quarter where things flipped.Â
Denny made a runner with two seconds left in the third quarter to spark a Saints 10-0 run. Almost immediately to begin the fourth, Dani Wagner drilled a three-pointer and then
Taylor Salonen scored a layup to force a timeout from Montana Tech and give the Saints a 50-48 lead.Â
Denny would get a block on defense and then hit a three on the other end to give the Saints a 53-48 lead.Â
Tech answered with a 5-0 run of its own to knot the game at 53. The two teams swapped buckets until the score tied at 61. The Saints called a play for Wagner, who hit a clutch three-pointer to put the Saints up three with 1:43 to go. Tech Answered with a Mesa Williams bucket, but then it was Denny who converted a difficult, off-balance shot with 15 seconds to go.Â
Tech called timeout and drew up a play for Mollie Peoples, who had 20 points. Denny, of course, checked Peoples on the half-court set, and finished the defensive sequence by blocking Peoples' shot to preserve the Saints' lead.Â
Brittney Johnson added two free throws to cement the game.Â
Four Saints reached double figures. In addition to Denny's 15,
Hannah Dean and
Jaidyn Lyman each had 11 and Johnson finished with 10.Â
The win keeps the Saints atop the Frontier Conference standings.Â
Carroll travels to Billings on Thursday to once again face No. 17 Rocky Mountain College.Â
