Carroll men's soccer team faces No. 20 Corban, NWC on road

HELENA, Mont. -- After a 1-1 in the Cascade Collegiate Conference, the Carroll College men's soccer team is hitting the road for a pair of games in Oregon.

The Saints (2-2, 1-1) face No. 20 Corban (5-1, 2-0) and Northwest Christian (2-3-1, 1-0-1) on Friday and Saturday, respectively.

"We'd like to take two matches this weekend and get back on track," Saints head coach Doug Mello said.

That starts with a game against perhaps the best team in the conference, Corban, in Salem, Oregon, on Friday.

"Corban in our four years in conference have always been on the top," Mello said. "They're just a good team, sound. We know it's going to be a tough battle. We can't have any lapses in our play like we did against Eastern (Oregon) in order to keep the game under control."

Carroll enters the game with an offense that fires a high volume of shots. The Saints are ranked No. 1 in the NAIA in shots per game (25.3) and shots on goal per game (13). Translating those chances into goals will be paramount for Carroll against a talented Corban squad.

On Saturday, the Saints take on Northwest Christian, a squad that could be just as big of a handful.

"Northwest Christian has come into their own in the last two years," Mello said. "Last year they made the playoffs and I think they had a good outing against Northwest that was picked to be in the top half of the conference."

Carroll will be at nearly full strength. Pablo Salamanca, who scored three goals last weekend, did not travel with the team to Oregon due to an injury.

"Two games on turf," Mello said. "We'll try to adjust and try to get two victories."

Carroll's first game against Corban is at 4:30 p.m. on Friday.
