Box Score 2 MESA, Ariz. – Tess Eaton notched a five-inning no-hitter, the second of her career and the second in school history to lead Carroll to a 9-0 win over Benedictine Mesa in the first game of a doubleheader.
The Saints scored seven runs in the final three innings of the second game to earn a 7-1 victory and move to 11-4 on the year and earn the ninth win in 10 games for the Saints.
Carroll opened the first game with an RBI single from
Allison Bayer to score
Jaylin Kenney. Later in the first inning,
Kendall Mooney doubled to left field to score Bayer and
Allison Williams.
In the bottom of the first, Eaton set a tone that would resonate for the rest of the game when she retired the side in order.
The Saints kept the offensive power going in the second inning.
Brittany Hogan started the inning with an infield single. She scored on a sac-fly from
Anna ApRoberts. Bayer's bat again showed its power. She hit a two-run home run over the centerfield wall, her third in three games to put Carroll up 6-0 after two innings.
Eaton walked the first batter of the second inning, the only base-runner of the game before retiring the side.
In the third, Kenney Singled up the middle to score
Brooke Brewer and give Carroll a 7-0 lead.
The Saints failed to score in the top of the fourth but added two runs in the fifth on a pair of bases-loaded walks to extend the lead to 9-0.
Eaton stuck out two in the bottom of the fifth to end the game on the run rule and complete the no-hitter.
The Saints notched 10 hits, including three by Kenney and two by Bayer and two by
Brooke Brewer.
In the second game of the doubleheader, both teams were scoreless through four innings before the Saints got on the board with a Kenney Single to score
Katie Huisman. ApRoberts singled in the next at-bat to score T.J, Rucker from third to give the Saints a 2-0 advantage.
Carroll added three more runs in the sixth on a two-out, bases-loaded double from
Courtney Schroeder which scored
Brittany Smith, Huisman and Brooke Yarnell.
Benedictine Mesa scored their only run of the game in the sixth, but the Saints responded with insurance in the top of the seventh. ApRoberts scored on a sac-fly from
Allison Williams before Carroll closed out the scoring on a single from Huisman to score
Megan McCormick.
Benedictine Mesa left a runner on in the seventh, but couldn't put together enough offensive consistency to keep pace with the red-hot Saints.
Carroll racked up 13 hits, three each by ApRoberts, McCormick and Huisman. Courtney Schoeder tallied a game-high three RBIs.
"It was a great start to the week," head coach
Aaron Jackson said. "Our bats came alive and our pitching was dominant, highlighted by
Tess Eaton's no-hitter. Tess threw a great game and utilized her defense. Our defense made some great plays to preserve the no-hitter."
The doubleheader closed out non-conference play for the Saints. Carroll travels directly from Arizona for a weekend Cascade Conference series at the University of British Columbia. The Saints built confidence in the 11-4 start and look to take that in conference play.
"This week concludes our preseason and has set us up for a great star," Jackson said. "This is the best start in school history and these games have prepared us for the gauntlet that is the Cascade Conference."
The Saints play UBC in Surrey, B.C. in two doubleheaders beginning Friday at 1 p.m.
