WEST COVINA, Calif. – Spurred by
Allison Williams' clutch hitting and strong performance in the circle in game two, the Carroll College softball team rallied to win a pair of games Sunday in the final day of the NAIA So Cal Classic. The Saints beat Marymount California 3-2 and Menlo 2-1.
The Saints did not create a lot of offense, but they did enough in a timely manner to lock up both wins.
In game one, the Saints could not string together enough hits to get on the board, but Marymount found offense with a two-run home run from in the fifth inning.
The Saints needed a boost, and they got it from Williams. As a pinch hitter, Williams faced one pitch, she sent that pitch over the left field wall which would spark a rally.
Four batters late,
Brittany Smith reached on an error which scored
Kendall Mooney, and
Tianna Sell giving Carroll a 3-2 lead.
Tess Eaton closed out her complete-game win with four strikeouts, allowing seven hits and walking four.
In the second game, Williams came up big again on the offensive end. She reached on an error in the second and was batted in by Mooney to give Carroll a 1-0 lead.
In the third, Menlo tied the game at 1-1 with a sac-fly in the third inning, and it remained tied until the seventh when Williams showed her power again.
She took a fastball high in the zone and sent the ball over the fence in dead-center field to put the Saints up 2-1.
After a pair of base runners reached, the Saints closed the game with a routine pop up to second base.
Williams gave up nine hits, but struck out seven, including the first four batters, and didn't give up a single walk.
The wins move Carroll to 4-3 on the weekend and the season.
The Saints next travel Minot, North Dakota, for games against Minot State and Minnesota Crookston.
