SALT LAKE CITY – After three games that didn't count towards season or statistical records, the Carroll men's soccer team will begin the season in earnest with a road game against NCAA DII foe Westminster College Sunday in Salt Lake City.
"We're happy with a 3-0 preseason start," head coach
Doug Mello said. "It is always good to go into your first game with a bit of wind of under your sail. Other than dealing with some pretty brutal heat, we are ready to go."
The Saints look to build on a 10-9-1 season a year ago and earned the first post season win in school history. This season, Carroll already has momentum heading into the first match.
"We feel we match up well with Westminster and we are expecting big plays from our big players," Mello said. "
Isaac Bostrom scored three goals in three preseason matches. Our defense has been solid, and we will feel like we are in a great spot as a team."
The goalkeeper position is a little up in the air for Carroll. Returning starter
Bernhardt Di Cino was injured in a non-soccer injury early in the summer and was cleared to play just as preseason practice started. Sophomore
Dominique Beauboeuf has performed admirably while Di Cino continues to get back into soccer shape.
"We will probably split time between Dominique and Bernie," Mello said. "Right now we feel comfortable with either one back there, but we will see who can step up over the next few games."
The game is slated for 1 p.m. no live stats, or video links are listed on the Westminster website.
"We are excited for a good campaign, and we would like to get it started off right tomorrow with a big win," Mello said.
