HELENA, Mont. – Michaela Kuefller scored two goals and Carroll college women's dominated possession en route to a 2-0 win over the Knights to move to 6-3-1 on the season and 3-0-1 in Cascade Conference play.
Carroll had a plethora of opportunities in the first half, the Saints outshot WPC 8-3 and had three corner kicks to none for the Knights but the offensive push didn't amount to a change in the scoreboard. The two teams entered the half notched in a scoreless tie.
"We talked about what should be successful that we weren't doing in the first half," head coach
David Thorvilson said. "We told them that we need to simplify what we were going to do. We were trying to do too much with the ball.
"We decided we were going to continue to push the game to our level, and to do that we had to keep using subs in the second half and it worked."
Carroll got on the board early in the second half when Kueffler scored in the 50th minute.
Madison Apsey shot from 15 yards out, her shot bounced off a Warner defender and right to Kueffler who sat in front of the goal. She sent the ball top shelf to finally give Carroll the lead.
Kueffler again found the net in the 83rd minute. A clearing pass found the senior as she streaked past her defender. One on one with the goalkeeper, she put the ball just inside the near post to put the Saints up 2-0 and close out the win.
Carroll goalkeeper
Jamie Carter earned her second consecutive shutout and her fifth in six matches while the Saints went 5-0-1 in that stretch.
She saw seven total shots but only one was on goal. The Saints outshot WPC 19-7, including 11-4 in the second half.
The Saints move into a tie with Eastern Oregon with 10 points a top the Conference standings. They return to action next week when they travel to face the College of Idaho in Caldwell on Sept. 30.
