EUGENE, Ore. – The Carroll College men's soccer team trailed most of the game but late goals from
Jose Porras and
Isaac Bostrom each scored a goal over the final 20 minutes to lead the Saints to a 2-1 win over Northwest Christian Friday in Eugene.
The Beacons took an early lead with a goal from Angel Sandoval from 18 yards out in the 14th minute. From that to the rest of the first half, the Saints tried to recover but their efforts were fruitless.
"This game was a real gut check," head coach
Doug Mello said. "They got a goal against the run of play and we chased the lead for a while. In the second half we were more focused and took the play to them and it paid off.
The Saints finally got on the board when Porras knocked in a rebound on the assist from
Eric Hollenbaugh for the equalizer in the 71st minute.
Just two minutes later, the Saints gained a huge advantage when Northwest Christian's Guilherme Almeida earned a red card and was ejected from the game, leaving the Beacons a man down.
Carroll followed with a goal in the 82nd minute. The Beacon goalkeeper came out to challenge and Bostrom chipped the ball over his head to earn the game-winner.
"Javi scored a timely goal in traffic and Isaac chipped the GK from 35 yards out for the match winner the offense stepped it up in the second half," Mello said. "It's a good start to conference schedule."
The Saints (3-3, 1-0 Cascade) continue their weekend of play with a match against 20th-ranked and undefeated Corban Saturday in Salem.
