HELENA, Mont. – The Carroll College men's soccer team fell to the University of Lethbridge 302 in overtime Thursday to open the season 0-1.
The Saints and Pronghorns battled to a 0-0 draw in the first half. Although both teams had chances that ultimately weren't able to capitalized on.
Kyle Tomson finally got the scoring going with a goal in the 59th minute.
Jose Porras found Thomson down the right side. The Pronghorn goalkeeper came out to challenge and was caught out of position. Thomson buried the ball over the top of the keepers outstretched hands to give Carroll the 1-0 lead.
The Pronghorns answered just 28 seconds later to equalize 1-1. In the 80th minute, Lethbridge took a 2-1 lead before the Saints answered in quick succession.
Just over two minutes later, the Saints equalized. Thomson kicked a corner kick short into Jonathon Taylor who's cross found a streaking
Isaac Bostrom for the header to notch the score at 2-2 in the 82nd minute.
Despite chances on both sides in the final minutes of regulation, neither team could capitalize and the game went extra time.
The Pronghorns attacked early in OT and just under four minutes into the first overtime, Lethbridge's Mike Weigle found Nick Leszczynski on a short cross who sent the ball into the corner of the goal to end the game.
"The game itself was hard-fought by both teams," head coach
Doug Mello said. "And both teams had a lot of chances to put home shots. It seemed like early match jitters for both in the sense that, holy cow, the game really could have been 6-5 or something.
"But I think we did some good things. We are a team that creates a lot of chances. We're just, at this point very early in the season, not a team that puts in those."
The Saints will be back in action Monday when they play host to MSU Billings at Nelson Stadium at 3 p.m.
