Saints Score Early in 4-1 Win over MSU Billings

HELENA, Mont. – Isaac Bostrom scored two goals and Jose Porras and Rodrigo Portillo added one each to lead the Carroll men's soccer team to a 4-1 win over NCAA DII MSU Billings Monday at Nelson Stadium.

The Saints got the scoring going early when Jose Porras sent the ball into the net just above the outstretched hand of the goalkeeper.

Just six minutes later, midfielder Jose Mena drove the ball down the left side of the field and found Bostrom with his centering pass that found the empty side of the net to put Carroll up 2-0.

In the 17th minute Bostrom crossed the ball to teammate Rodrigo Portillo. The goal keeper dover towards Portillo to defend and Portillo tapped it to the spot that keeper had just vacated to give Carroll a 3-0.

The match was played in less than ideal conditions, a constant wind came out of the west and midway through the first half, the power went out on the south side of Helena leaving the scoreboard lifeless.

The match continued however and the Yelowjackets got on the board in the second half. In the 67th minute a corner kick from Thiago Novis provided Julien Dragomir a perfect in a scrum in front of the goal. His header found the back of the net which to cut the lead to 3-1 but it would be the only goal mustered by MSUB.

In the 89th minute, Porras was fouled in the box as he pressed an attack. The resulting penalty kick was taken by Bostrom he buried the ball to the right as the goalkeeper dove left to give the Saints the 4-1 lead which they would hold onto for the remaining seconds.

The Saints move to 1-1 on the season. Head coach Doug Mello is excited about his team's performance just a few days after a disappointing showing against the University of Lethbridge.

"This game was a much better performance against a much tougher team," Mello said. "They are big a physical and we did exactly what we needed to do to get the win. We established our game plan before the match and fellas followed it to a 'T', it made a big difference."

Another big difference was the return of Portillo from injury. The freshman midfielder provided the Saints with some much-needed speed.

"Rodrigo was huge for us, his speed and ability to get around corners and move the ball around made a big impact," Mello said. "We have some other guys that are injured and a bunch that aren't 100 percent so if we can get healthy we'll just keep getting better."

The Saints return to action Saturday when they face the Master's College at 1 p.m. in a neutral-site match at Westminster College in Salt Lake City.
