CALDWELL, Idaho – Carroll College softball spilt their first-ever Cascade Conference games on the road Friday at College of Idaho winning 4-3 in the first game before dropping the second 11-2.
The first game was a pitcher's duel between the Saints'
Megan Gipe and the Yotes' Ashley Pesek with the game scoreless going into the fourth inning.
Carroll's bats came alive in the inning after
Courtney Cloud singled to left field scoring
Taylor Otswald and Gipe. Two batters later,
Kaydee Parsons homered to left field, scoring Cloud and giving the Saints a 4-0 lead.
C of I chipped away at the score in the bottom of the fourth with a RBI single to center field cutting the Saints' lead to 4-1.
The Yotes scored two more runs in the sixth inning on a RBI double and RBI triple. With the tying run on third base, Gipe struck out the next batter and got out of the inning on a groundout to herself.
Gipe went 1-2-3 in the seventh inning to seal the one-run victory for the Saints.
Gipe tossed a complete game, giving up nine hits and allowed three runs with six strike outs. She improves to 3-4 on the season.
Jaylin Kenney went 2-4 on the day while Cloud was 1-3 with a run and a RBI.
"Megan had a great outing today," head coach
Aaron Jackson. "She had a big strikeout and groundout in the heart of their lineup and closed the door for us."
The Yotes struck first in the second game with a run in the third and fourth inning to give them a 2-0 led after four.
College of Idaho broke open the lead in the fifth inning with five runs after six straight batters reached base. The Yotes led 7-0 going into the sixth inning.
Allison Bayer got the Saints on the board with a RBI double that scored Kenney. Next batter was
Madison Soper who also doubled and brought home Bayer. Carroll trailed 7-2 after the top of the six.
The Yotes answered back in the bottom half of the inning with two two-run homeruns that locked up the 11-2 victory.
Kenney went 2-3 with a run scored in the second game. Bayer was 1-3 on the day with a run scored and a RBI.
Ashley Davis picked up the loss (2-2) after throwing four and two-thirds innings, giving up 10 hits and allowing seven runs. MacKenna Landis pitched the final inning for the Saints giving up four runs on five hits.
"We played hard all day, just wasn't able to get things going at the plate." Jackson said. "I'm sure the team will use today as fuel to win tomorrow."
Due to weather conditions in Oregon, the Saints will face Eastern Oregon in Caldwell, Idaho, on Saturday. Eastern Oregon is 6-12 on the season after splitting their doubleheader against Great Falls on Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. and there will be no live stats for the games.
