Box Score 2 PHOENIX, Ariz. – Carroll College softball suffered from errors and struggled to get the bats going in two tough losses to Arizona Christian in Phoenix, Arizona, Saturday.
The Firestorm struck quickly in the first inning off of a fielder's choice from Alyssa Vanderdrink that scored Meaghen Nelson.
The Saints responded in the top of the fourth when
Allison Bayer doubled home
Paige Blake who reached on a hit by pitch to tie the game at 1-1.
Arizona Christian took the lead back in the bottom half of the inning after a RBI double from Jackie Aguilar. The Firestorm would add another run in the bottom of the sixth inning to win 3-1.
Megan Gipe pitched a complete game, giving up seven hits and three runs, two of which were earned. She recorded five strikeouts and issued two walks.
The second game of the doubleheader was all Arizona Christian. The Firestorm scored three runs in the second inning to take control of the game.
After adding one more run in the third inning, Arizona Christian broke out in the fourth inning with four runs. With two outs in the inning, Vanderdrink reached on a fielding error that scored Nelson. Next batter was Kylie Christman who hit a three-run home run to give the Firestorm an 8-0 lead.
In the top of the sixth, Carroll's
Justine Taylor singled to center field, scoring
Brittany Hogan to cut the lead to 8-1 before ultimately dropping 9-1 after six innings due to the run rule.
Tess Eaton went five and two-thirds innings for the Saints, giving up nine runs but only four earned on eight hits.
Carroll dropped to 6-4 on the season and will travel to Kennewick, Washington, for the CCC Crossover on March 5-6. The Saints take on 17th-ranked Corban College and Northwest Christian University both days. Corban is 8-4 on the season and Northwest Christian is 3-8 overall.
