SPRINGFIELD, Ore. – The Carroll College men's soccer team held the potent Southern Oregon attack scoreless through 110 minutes and earned a 6-5 shootout win in eight attempts Friday night to advance to the semifinals of the Cascade Conference tournament.
Southern Oregon outshot Carroll 13-5 but neither team put much on frame with SOU notching just three shots on goal to Carroll's one.
After 110 minutes of soccer with very little in the way of offensive action, the shootout was more than anyone bargained for.
After the second PK shot was missed by the Saints, SOU seemed to have the advantage but a save by Carroll goalkeeper
Bernhardt Di Cino on the Raiders' fourth attempt evened the score at 3-3.
The Saints missed on the sixth attempt and SOU just needed one make for the win but Di Cino came through again. Two more attempts came for each team. The Saints were true with both of their attempts but the final SOU attempt was stopped and Carroll earned the win.
It is the first time Carroll advanced to the second round of the conference tournament in three years as a program.
The Saints take on Corban Saturday at 9 p.m. in Springfield. The other semifinal is between the University of Great Falls and Rocky Mountain.
