Saints Face Yotes in Road Tilt

THIS WEEK IN CARROLL FOOTBALL

The Saints travel to Cadwell, Idaho to face the College of Idaho in the first of back-to-back road games. Both teams are 1-3 in Frontier play. Carroll's win came in week one against No. 10 Montana Tech. The Yotes notched their victory over No. 16 Eastern Oregon on Sept. 17 in La Grande. Carroll is coming off of a sorely-needed bye week, C of I played Southern Oregon in Ashland last week, falling 31-27.

LAST GAME: CARROLL FALLS TO SOUTHERN OREGON 34-14
Southern Oregon put up 523 yards of offense, including 286 yards in the air to earn a 34-14 victory at Nelson Stadium.

Carroll had a pair of big early plays but couldn't take advantage of the opportunities.

Southern Oregon turned the ball over on their first possession when a batted pass was intercepted by McBride Galt at the Southern Oregon 44-yard line but the Saints went three and out and the Raiders scored on their next possession.

On SOU's third possession, the Saints forced a three-and-out and blocked the ensuing punt. The Carroll offense took over the ball on the Raider 25-yard line drove to the 1-yard line before being stifled by SOU's defense.

Two plays later, SOU's Rey Vega took the ball from the six-yard line 94-yards to the endzone for the score and the 14-0 lead.

Carroll answered with an eight-play 65-yard drive that culminated in a seven-yard quarterback keeper touchdown from JT Linder to close out the first quarter 14-7.

The two teams battle for most of the second quarter with neither team scoring before Southern Oregon notched two touchdowns in the final three minutes to take a 28-7 lead into the half.

Carroll opened the second half with an impressive drive that led to a touchdown run from Major Ali but the Saints suffered a loss. Starting quarterback JT Linder was knocked out after a low hit. He did not return, although he still listed as the starter on the depth chart for the match-up with the Yotes.

Tanner Gustavsen took the helm of the offense but wasn't able to get the Saints back into the end zone after his first drive. The Raiders on the other hand would add a field goal and a fourth-quarter touchdown to close out the 34-14 win.

ABOUT COLLEGE OF IDAHO
Head coach Mike Moroski leads the College of Idaho in their third season since the return of football to Caldwell. The Yotes are led by senior quarterback Tyler Cox and runningback Darius-James Peterson. The duo has combined for twelve touchdowns. Cox throwing six and Peterson running for six.

Defensively, the ball-hawking Yotes lead the Frontier in interceptions and are tied for second in fumble recoveries and turnover margin. Carroll transfer Nate Moore leads C of I in tackles and interceptions.

QUICK NOTES
• Carroll hopes to get back on track after three-straight losses. It is just the second time the Saints have lost three-straight since Coach Van Diest's first season at the helm.

• The Saints started the season with a bang, topping No. 7 Montana Tech 27-24 on a last-minute field goal. The Saints trailed 24-10 with just over nine minutes remaining in the game buts scored 17 points in the final minutes to notch the win.

•Two Carroll receivers made a triumphant return to the field in week one after season-ending injuries in 2014. Kyle Griffith caught six passes for 74 yards and a touchdown and Connor Fohn tallied six catches for 141 yards, including an 80-yard touchdown to spark the Carroll comeback over Montana Tech.

• Fohn comes into the game ranked No. 6 in the NAIA in receptions per game, No. 9 in receiving yards per game, No. 21 total receptions and No. 21 total receiving yards. He is also ranked No. 34 in all-purpose yards per game and all-purpose yards. He is the leading receiver in the conferences at 429 receiving yards.

• With 188 yards against MSU-Northern, Fohn has the individual single-game high for receiving yards in 2016.

• C of I's top defender, Nate Moore transferred from Carroll where he redshirted before transferring to C of I for their "Zero-Year" ahead of the first year of the program in 2014.

• College of Idaho ranked 15ths for scoring defense per game at 19.2 PPG.

• C of I ranks 50th for total offense per game at 368.6 YPG. • The Yotes are in their third year as a program, after winning four games in 2014 and 2015, C of I has two wins in five games and a 1-3 record in Frontier play.

• C of I has 23 transfers on this season's roster.

• Major Ali notched his first touchdown of his Carroll career against Southern Oregon, the redshirt freshman had 13 carried for 60-yards.

• JT Linder ranks in the top-50 in four different statistical categories including Passing Yards per game, total offensive yards per game, pass efficiency and total passing.

• Tucker Johnson is seventh in the Frontier Conference for tackles per game at 8.5. David Anderson is eighth at 7.8.

• Alec Basterrachea (4.5) leads the Frontier Conference for sacks per game.

• Carroll ranks seventh in the Frontier for total offense.

• Carroll is second in the Frontier for sacks per game at 3.1.

• The Saints are fifth in the Frontier Conference in total defense

•There are 37 true freshmen listed on the Carroll roster.

• In one of the smallest classes in recent history, only 18 seniors are listed on the roster. Seven of those seniors are listed as starters on the two-deep.

• Head Coach Mike Van Diest has the second-best winning percentage (.838) of any active college football coach with more than ten years of experience. He trails only Ohio State's Urban Meyer. His winning percentage is also the 11th-best of all-time.
