Saints Topple Walla Walla, Will Meet SOU in CCC Tournament

HELENA, Mont. – Carroll College men's soccer scored three goals in under four minutes of play and outshot Wall Walla 47-2 en route to a 4-0 win over the Wolves to close out the regular season at Nelson Stadium.

The two teams got off to a slow start but got things going in the 28th minute with two goals in under 20 seconds. The first came on a long cross from Henry Smaldon to Sam Malouf which settled in from of the goal Malouf sent it past the keeper to put Carroll up 1-0.

The Saints scored again in quick fashion. Just 15 seconds later, a Walla Walla defender's attempt to clear a corner kick was deflected right to Javi Navas just outside the box, he sent the ball far post to give Carroll a 2-0 lead in the 28th minute.
Smaldon added to his stat line in the 32nd minute when Raliey prescots sent the ball into Zach Waldher whose header found Smaldon all alone. He capitalized with his third goal in two matches.

The 3-0 score would hold until halftime but just over a minute after the break Eli Fox would score with an assist from Dylan Allen to give the Saints a 4-0 lead that would be the final score.

The win locks up the fifth-seed for the Saints who will meet fourth-seeded Southern Oregon in the first round of the Cascade playoffs. SOU topped Carroll 3-1 just last week.

"I think going in we thought we would probably get a few more goals but their goalie made some good saves," head coach Doug Mello said. "Winning 4-0 and dominating the match is something to build on heading into the Conference tournament and now we set our sights on Southern Oregon who we are excited to play again."

The Saints played 24 players in the match and both backup goalkeepers saw time, Dominic Beauboeuef started the match and Daniel Bradt played the final half.

"It was great to see our goalies into the game and get some of the younger guys in while giving some nicked up guys some rest," Mello said. Now we shift our focus to get a couple of good days of practice in and preparing for Southern Oregon."

Today's match was the final for seniors Jacob Groh, Adrian White, Waldher and Allen. A special moment came late in the match when all four checked into the match for one final time on the pitch at Nelson Stadium.

"The crowd was great for the seniors all four of those guys have contributed immensely to the success of our program," Mello said. "We are going to miss their leadership and their abilities going forward but they still have an opportunity to make a run in the conference tournament and do something special."

The Saints and Raiders kick off at 8 p.m. Friday at WIllamalane Park in Springfield, Oregon.
