HELENA, Mont. – Southern Oregon's Carlos Magaña scored two goals and assisted on another as SOU defeated Carroll College 3-1 in men's soccer action Friday on the pitch at Nelson Stadium.
The Raiders got on the board early with a goal from Magaña. A long pass was deflected by a Carroll defender and goalkeeper
Bernhardt Di Cino came out to challenge the ball and Magaña sent it through his legs and into the goal to give SOU the 1-0 in the 9th minute.
In the 15th minute, a corner kick rattled into the box and deflected off to the opposite side of the box where Dakota Scott volleyed the ball past Di Cino to give SOU a 2-0 lead.
That score would hold until half. Southern Oregon outshot Carroll 7-3 in the first half. Carroll would turn up the pressure in the second half but not before the Raiders would add to their lead.
In the 58th minute, Magaña would notch his second goal a header on a cross from Tanner Holland.
Carroll would finally answer on a goal from
James Lamont in the 64th minute.
Jonathan Taylor sent a cross through the box. It was first headed by
Henry Smaldon who sent it back to the Lamont right in front of the net. Lamont's header went right past the keeper's outstretched hands to cut the SOU lead to 3-1.
Carroll outshot the Raiders 9-3 in the second half but the Saints couldn't turn the shots into goals and SOU held on for the win.
Carroll falls to 8-8 on the year and 6-5 in conference play. Carroll hosts Multnomah Friday before welcoming Walla Walla to Nelson Stadium on the 30th. The two teams are a combined 0-20 in Cascade play.
