Walla Walla, Wash. – Kayla Bayer scored a lone goal in the 59th minute to break a scoreless tie and give the Carroll College women's soccer team the 1-0 road win over Whitman College Sunday afternoon in Walla Walla.
The win comes on the tail end of a four-day stretch that saw the Saints travel nearly 1,500 miles and play three games.
"I am very proud of the team today," head coach David Thorvilson said. "We are mentally and physical tired and played three very good teams in four days."
The Saints and Missionaries battled to a scoreless tie in the first half but both teams had chances. Carroll ended the half with eight shots and two shots on goal. Whitman tallied six shots but equaled the Saints with two on goal.
"Whitman came out fast and had the better of play for much of the first 20 minutes," Thorvilson said. "Once we found our legs, we played better. By the second half we were the aggressors and controlling more of the attacks."
The goal came fourteen minutes after the half.
Lexi Pyette sent a cross from the right and found Bayer for the shot into the left side.
"Pyette played an amazing second half and was very hard to defend. She created the goal," Thorvilson said. "For the last 30 minutes we had a good mix of attack along with sound defensive shape and limited their chances of coming back."
Carroll held on for the win and the second shut out on the season for
Jamie Carter. The Saints are now 2-3 on the season and open conference play on Friday, Sept. 18 against Northwest Christian at Nelson Stadium.
