HELENA, Mont. – Michaela Kueffler tallied a goal and an assist and
Talya Vaira scored her second goal of the season to lead Carroll to a 2-0 win over Northwest Christian in the first Cascade Conference ever for the Saints.
It was the third win for the Saints, each of those a shutout for goal keeper
Jamie Carter.
"A shutout and a win. Those are two very important things for us," head coach David Thorvilson said. "I thought we played really well in the first half, but we let down a little bit in the second half. I think they made some nice adjustments at halftime, but I think our confidence level got the best of us and we got away from our style of play a little bit."
The Saints were aggressive early and tallied multiple offside calls before Kueffler's goal came in the in the 12th minute on the assist from
Natalie Johnston.
The saints continued to control the possession and Vaira's goal came in the 38th minute. Kuefller dribbled to the end line and sent a cross to Vaira who sent the header over the outstretched hands of NCU goal keeper Kristin Fulbright.
The Beacons tallied six shots on goal but most weren't difficult saves for the 2014 Frontier Conference Player of the Year.
"I'm excited about the fact that we didn't give up a goal," Thorvilson said. "They took a lot of shots from farther out, which was nice from Jamie's perspective because she got to sit back and kind of evaluate those a little bit more than just coming straight at her."
