Carroll Men Battle to 1-1 Draw at Warner Pacific

Portland  – The Carroll College men's soccer team opened its two-match road trip with a 1-1 draw against Warner Pacific Friday afternoon in Portland.

The Saints took the lead early on a goal from Isaac Bostrom in the 21st minute. The goal came off of a free kick which entered the box and Terry Cox sent the ball across the box and headed in by Bostrom.

Warner Pacific had a chance to equalize in the 30th minute on a penalty kick after a handball in the box but for the second time in as many games Saints goalkeeper Conor Smith came up with a PK save to preserve to the Carroll advantage.

"Cojo (Smith) has been great on PKs this season," head coach Doug Mello said. "This is his second game in a row that he has had to step up to the line on a PK and he's made both saves. Last game we ended up losing but this game it made a big difference."

The Knights would score just seven minutes later to equalize the score on an unassisted goal from Cesar Esquivel.

The Saints and Knights would then battle the rest of the way without a goal. Carroll tallied 10 shots in the second half to just three for Warner but WPC goalkeeper Joe White had six saves to maintain the draw.

The two teams continued the match that was ugly at times but in the end, the Saints ended up with the first draw of the season.

"Kudos to our guys after a tough travel day," Mello said "It was a chippy match played on turf and in the rain. We had to get through a lot adversity and I thought we played well.
The Saints close out the road trip with a match at Eastern Oregon tomorrow at 2 p.m.
