HELENA, Mont. – The Carroll College women's soccer team scored two early goals and tallied its third-straight shutout win to top Corban University 2-0 and move to 2-0 in Cascade Conference play.
In the seventh minute
Ylena Gazdik's free kick found
Carissa Yedica in front of the goal. She sent the ball past the right of the goal keeper for the 1-0 lead.
Just 11 minutes,
Cassidy Hammons sent a corner kick into a crowded box but found on the far side of the goal and she chipped it in for the 2-0 lead in the 18th minute.
"It was very important for us to get early goals," head coach David Thorvilson said. "We talked about coming out fast and it made a big difference today. We got Corban on their heels and held on. Coach (Marty) Ziesmer is a great coach and he has recruited some great players."
Thorvilson was also excited about the way the Saints scored.
"It was great to score on set pieces," Thorvilson said. "That is a big improvement for our offense. We struggled to score a year ago but we've made big strides and have scored from a lot of different positions."
The defense again set the tone for the win. In four wins this season, the Saints have yet to allow a goal.
"We really preach defense to our whole team," Thorvilson said. "The forwards set the pace for us and they've worked really hard to help out the defense."
The Saints outshot Corban 10-5 with and 5-4 in shots on goal.
Jamie Carter has four shutouts on the season.
With the win, the Saints remain perfect in Cascade Conference play. Thorvilson is excited to get off to a good start in the new conference.
"There is a big unknown factor when it comes to playing in a new conference," Thorvilson said. To start the conference with two shutout wins is big to get things started the right way. Will really help our confidence as we hit the road and play against some really tough teams."
Carroll next travels to Warner Pacific (Ore.) Friday, Sept. 25, and Eastern Oregon on Saturday Sept. 26.
