Saints Fall to Preseason Favorite Corban 2-0

HELENA, Mont. – The Carroll College men's soccer team fell 2-0 to Cascade Conference favorite Corban University on the pitch at Nelson Stadium Sunday afternoon.

"I think we deserved a better fate,' head coach Doug Mello said. "It was a tightly contested match and we knew it was going to be a battle. You make your own luck, we were in the right spots a few times and the ball didn't find the back of the net

The first half was a scoreless tie but both teams had great opportunities. The Saints had two shots in the first three minutes of the match but the shots went just wide.

Corban had a great opportunity in the 34th minute when a foul in the box set up a penalty kick for the Warriors. Carroll goalkeeper Conor Smith dove right and cradled Quamie, Dinnall's shot to preserve the tie.

"Cojo (Smith) was great in goal and his penalty kick save was obviously huge," Mello said. "We had some great momentum in the first half. We just couldn't capitalize on it."

The tie was broken in the 51st minute when Corban's Bobby Hutchin found the back of the net for his second goal of the season.

Carroll again had chances but couldn't get the ball in the back of the net.

The Warriors added a goal in the 90th minute to push the advantage to 2-0.

Although Mello is disappointed with the loss he is happy about the effort against the Cascade preseason favorite.

"We learned a couple things off of this match," Mello said. "Most of all we learned that we can compete against the best in the league. We might see these guys in the future and hopefully we can flip the score around."

The Saints hit the road for their first Cascade Conference road games. Carroll takes on Waner Pacific Friday Sept. 25 and Eastern Oregon Saturday, Sept. 26.
