Box Score Phoenix, Ariz. – The Carroll College softball team split a double header with Arizona Christian University Saturday to earn the third win in program history and snap a 12-game skid.
The Saints fell 4-2 in the early game but
Megan Gipe pitched a seven-inning shutout, she allowed just four hits and struck out three to earn the win.
Both teams were scoreless through five innings when, in the top of the sixth,
Maddie Jones got a leadoff single to get things going for the Saints.
Destry McNellis pinch ran for jones and advanced all the way to third on a sacrifice hit from
Kathryn Zink and a passed ball. She scored when
Jaylin Kenney reached on an error.
Kenney scored two batters later when the ACU left fielder mishandled a
Justine Taylor base hit to give her an opening to the plate.
The Saints added an insurance run in the top of the seventh when
Jadeen Sakauye was singled in by Kenney.
Arizona Christian loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh but Gipe got out of the Jam and the Saints earned the win.
"This game is funny," head coach
Aaron Jackson said. "There is just a tiny separation between going 3-1 and 1-3 over a four-game series. We made a lot of plays and we could have won three of four games against ACU but we ended it right and now we get to go to Southern California and see what we can do there."
The Saints play games against Menlo College, Concordia University (Calif.) and Antelope Valley over the next few days.
