Saints Softball Drops Two in Great Falls

Box Score GREAT FALLS, Mont. – The Carroll College softball team was swept by the University of Great Falls 7-4, 3-2 Sunday at the Great Falls Multi Sports Complex in Great Falls.

The Saints led in both games but in the end the experience of UGF won out and the Argos earned both wins. Despite the two losses head coach Aaron Jackson thinks his team is on the verge of turning things around.

"Today was a tough day I felt that we played really well at times and then lost focus for a couple innings," Jackson said. "This team is starting realize their potential and I believe our best is to come. There is still a lot to play for and we are not out of the race to make the conference tournament. We just have to bring all facets of the game every inning. "

The Argos took a 1-0 in the first inning. Carroll came back with three runs in the second inning.

Jaylin Kenney got the Saints scoring going with a first-pitch, two-run home run to score Maddie Jones. Later in the inning Megan Gipe singled up the middle to score Taylor Otswald.

The Argo retook the lead with three runs in the bottom of the second and added a run in the third, and scored two runs in the fifth to advance the lead to 7-3.

The Saints scored in the top of the sixth on a Katie Zink home run to left field but it wasn't enough to overcome the deficit.

In the second game, the Saints 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth on a throwing error.

UGF answered with two runs in the bottom of the fifth but the Saints tied the game in the seventh with another Zink home run.

"Katie Zink had a big day at the plate blasting two home runs," Jackson said. "Also Jaylin Kenney hit her first ever home run which was neat to see."

The Argos answered with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. Keeley Van Blaricom homered to center on a full count for the walk-off win.

"We had some great performances today, Mackenna Landis threw a great game in game two," Jackson said. "Unfortunately we didn't do enough offensively to get her the win. She deserved a better result. We will continue to battle and learn from this weekend."

The Argos won three games of the four-game, split location series. They took a 2-1 lead in the nine-game conference series to determine who will go to the Cascade Conference Tournament. The first three games in each of the three four-game series count toward the conference series.

The second series in the conference series takes place April 3-4 at Centennial Park in Helena. Both doubleheaders are scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
