Box Score IRVINE, Calif. – The Carroll College softball team earned a 3-1, 6-3 sweep of Menlo CollegeTuesday morning for the first sweep in program history and combined with a win on Saturday gives the Saints the first three-game win streak in Carroll history.
"Today was a great day to be a Saint. As a team we put all three facets of the game together and got the first sweep in school history," head coach
Aaron Jackson said. "We had great performance on the mound by both
Megan Gipe and Mackenna Landis. Megan threw a complete game in game one and then came in to close out the second game. MacKenna pitch a solid four innings and the three runs she gave up where not on her but our defense."
The Saints started the day with the 3-1 win. Gipe pitched a stellar game and allowed only four hits while the Carroll offense racked up 11.
The Saints allowed a run in the first inning but owned the game the rest of the way. Carroll scored in the third, fourth and fifth inning and earned the win by making plays when it mattered.
The same held true in the second game. In the top of the fifth inning, the Saints trailed 3-2 when Katie Zink came to the plate with the bases loaded and with a 1-1 count hit a double to center field to clear the bases.
"Offensively, we finally broke through with great timely hitting," Jackson said. "The biggest hit coming from Katie Zink in game two with a big base clearing double."
The double gave Carroll a 5-3 lead, it would be enough with the stellar defense, but they would add to it with another run in the seventh to take the game 6-3.
"The great thing about our defense today is that we stuck with a lot of balls and made up for the couple of mistakes with great plays or a big hit," Jackson said. "The team is learning that we aren't going to win a game on one play, it is a total team effort. We continue to learn and we are buying into the idea of 18 strong."
The Saints take Wednesday off before playing Concordia (Calif.) in a doubleheader Thursday.
