HELENA, Mont. – Carroll College men's basketball hosts Northwest Indian College Wednesday evening in non-conference action at the PE Center at 7 p.m.
The Saints are 2-1 on the season and are coming off of a 79-76 loss at Cal Maritime. Carroll will look to rebound against NWIC, a team that fell 114-57 in an exhibition loss to Montana State.
Head coach
Carson Cunningham is looking to improve after miscues in the second game.
"Obviously we would have loved to sweep and that was the goal," Cunningham said. "We're disappointed in not achieving that goal. We played a really good team and they just out executed us. We need to learn from it and get better."
A three-point loss hangs on a few plays; a turnover can be a four-point swing and completely change the outcome of a game. In the first half of the Cal Maritime game, the Saints gave up 50 points. An unusually high number for a Cunningham coached team.
"They did some really nice things in California but we didn't do enough in game two and we lost by a bucket," Cunningham said. "If we can get everybody, not just the young guys, to sharpen up, maybe we win by that game by a bucket. I am not making any big judgements about where we are at, other than that we clearly need to improve."
The Eagles play a lot of road games, including Frontier Conference teams Montana Tech, Rocky Mountain and Lewis Clark. LC beat NWIC 123-66 and 139-58 on consecutive nights. They gave the Orediggers more of a challenge but fell 91-75 and 110-101. The Eagles also fell to Rocky Mountain 102-53.
Cunningham looks at the game as an opportunity to focus on the weaknesses the Carroll coaches saw on the two-game California swing but the Saints can't overlook their opponent.
"We have so much to work on this week, we just want to see improvement on those things," Cunningham said. "Northwest Indian put up over 100 points on Montana Tech. Obviously, if you can put 100 points on a Frontier team you can score. We have to understand that this team can get hot and if we play poor defense, this team can light us up. We want to see progress in the areas that we are highlighting that clearly need improvement."
The game is the final home game until the Dec. 3, conference opener against Montana Tech. The Saints hit the road for three Division I exhibition games and a two-game tournament at Dickinson State.
