Carroll Volleyball Sweeps UMW to Advance to the Semifinal

HELENA, Mont. – Carroll College volleyball swept Montana Western 25-22, 25-22, 26-24 in the quarterfinals of the Frontier Conference Tournament, presented by Lee Enterprises.

The Saints did what they did in the previous two meetings, swept the Bulldogs. There was a little drama in the third set when UMW took a 24-22 lead but Carroll scored four-straight points to earn the game and match victory.

"When it was 22-24 our girls knew that we had to take care of business," head coach Moe Boyle said. "I am hoping that will carry over for tomorrow and we don't get to the point where we have to make plays in a tough situation."

In the first set, Montana Western jumped out to a 3-1 lead before Saints rattled off six-straight to take a lead and they wouldn't trail the rest of the set. UMW cut the lead to 22-21 but Carroll scored three of the last four points to earn the 25-22 win.

In the second set Carroll trailed early but took a 14-13 lead as aprt of a 4-0 run in the middle of the set. Another 4-0 run gave the Saints a 22-17 lead before the Bulldogs tallied a 4-0 run of their own to cut the lead to 22-21. Carroll closed the set with another 3-1 run for the 25-22 win.

The Saints and Bulldogs battled back and forth in the third set before the Bulldogs built a 24-22 lead and the Saints closed out the set 26-24.

Holly Morehouse led the Saints with 12 kills and a stellar .346 hitting percentage. Emily Sullivan tallied 11 kills and a .333 hitting percentage. Jonni Dorr had 24 assists and Rebeccas Sweeney led Carroll with 19 assists.

The Saints had 19 hitting errors to Western's 17 but overcame the mistakes to earn the win.

"We had a lot of unforced errors that we haven't normally had this season. I am hoping that that is just jitters ad we'll be ready to go for tomorrow but it is nice to be able to overcome those mistakes and win close games," Boyle said. "I told our team that we need to focus on our job. We have a lot to worry about if we are just trying to take care of our side of the net. When we do that we are a pretty solid team."

The Saints meet Lewis-Clark tomorrow at 1 p.m. in the Frontier Semifinal. The Warriors defeated MSU-Northern 3-0 in the 7 p.m. Carroll and L-C split regular season meetings, the Saints won 3-1 in Helena and fell 3-1 in Lewiston.

"We have a game plan going in and I truly believe if we follow the game plan, we give ourselves a strong chance to win and that is all you can ask," Boyle said.
