GREAT FALLS, Mont. – Carroll College Volleyball earned a hard-fought road win over the University of Great Falls Thursday 22-25, 25-21, 25-18, 18-25, 15-9 to move to 7-2 in Frontier Conference play.
The Saints overcame a first-game loss and a disappointing fourth set to regain momentum in the tiebreaker and earn the win.
"I am very proud of the team for remaining calm and collected in fifth set," head coach Moe Boyle said. "This sport is so often dictated by momentum but we didn't let the fourth set carry over. We got on top of that fifth set and it made a huge difference."
The Saints were led offensively by
Crystal Schmidt with 11 kills and
Holly Morehouse with 10.
Mallory Arbizzani tallied seven kills in limited action for a stellar .353 hitting percentage.
Schmidt also had a match-high five block assists.
Paige Montgomery added four black assists. The saints tallied 14 blocks to the Argos eight.
"Crystal, although fighting illness, did a great job defensively for us at the net," Boyle said. "Our blocking made the difference. Whether we win or lost each set and it really showed itself in the fifth."
The blocking led to the Argos hitting just .051, their second lowest performance on the season.
Rebecca Sweeney led the Saints with 22 digs.
Jonni Dorr had 26 assists to lead the Saints while
Rayna Pilgeram had a season-high 20.
The Saints host MSU Northern Saturday in the final regular-season home match. The match begins at 5 p.m. and, being Halloween, there will be a costume contest with prizes for the winners.
