HELENA, Mont. – Down two sets to zero against No. 20 Montana Tech, the Carroll volleyball team seemed to have no answer for the Oredigger methodical offense, but the Saints battled back to earn a 19-25, 21-25, 25-18, 25-8, 15-11 win to move to 5-0 in Frontier play and earn an eight-straight win.
"It was a lot of getting the right people in the right places and we didn't have that in the first two sets," head coach Moe Boyle said. "We had matchups that didn't work. We weren't playing very good defense at the net on their hitters and we weren't putting the ball away."
The Saints found a rhythm in the third set with a .346 hitting percentage while holding Montana Tech to .071. Carroll never trailed in the set and after a 9-9 tie the Saints went on a 9-3 run to take control en route to the 25-18 win.
The Saints were dominant in the fourth set with a .474 attack percentage to the Diggers, -0.148. The Diggers recorded only four kills in the set compared to eight errors and Carroll rolled to the 25-8 win.
The final set was tightly contested until the Saints, down 6-5, rattled off an 8-2 run en route to the 15-11 set win and the five set victory.
Carroll has not lost since Sept. 11, and Friday's match was the first in that time to go to five sets.
Emily Sullivan led the Saints with 13 kills and a .290 attack percentage.
Holly Morehouse,
Crystal Schmidt and
Paige Montgomery all had 11 kills for the Saints. Schmidt had a .409 attack percentage and Morehouse was very solid with a .364 percentage.
Jonni Dorr had 33 assists, two service aces and 12 kills.
Rebecca Sweeney had a team high 20 digs in the match.
The Saints return to action on Oct. 9-10 at the Davenport University Panther Invitational in Grand Rapids, Mich. The Saints face four teams, including No. 24 Indiana Wesleyan.
