Four Saints Score to Topple Rocky 4-1

Helena, Mont. – Four different Saints scored goals to lead Carroll women's soccer to a 4-1 victory over Rocky Mountain College Saturday at Nelson Stadium.

Michaela Kueffler scored in the fourth minute to get the Saints on the board early. Lexi Pyette found Kueffler running and she beat the goalkeeper one-on-one to give the Saints a 1-0 lead on her third goal of the season.

In the 26th minute a cross from Cassidy Hammons to Pyetter was challenged by the Rocky goalkeeper, she failed to corral the pass leaving Pyette with a wide open net, she tapped in the ball to give Carroll the 2-0 lead.

The Battlin' Bears would strike back in the 58th minute from a goal by Leah Hippauf before Hammons would answer and score her first goal of the season in the 70th minute from 20 yards out on a free kick to put the Saints up 3-1.

Carissa Yedica would seal the game in the 83rd minute when a corner kick entered a scrum in the box, the Rocky goalkeeper dove but failed to collect the ball. Yedica found the ball and turning, buried it into the middle of the net for her second goal of the season to put the Saints up 4-1.

The Saints consistently tested the Battlin' Bears defense with 11 shots and 10 on goal, and outshot Rocky 11 to 6.  Carroll recorded seven corner kicks and Jamie Carter tallied four saves.

"We have many different weapons on this team and we don't rely on just one or two players to score all of our goals, and this can be difficult for teams to defend against," head coach David Thorvilson said.

"We wanted to limit their chances from corners and set pieces, and unfortunately we gave up a goal on a corner but our defense played very well," Thorvilson said. "We have a few things to work on but we played well today and got a win against a very good team."

The Saints improve to 7-4 on the season and 5-1 in Cascade Conference play.  The Saints are now tied for first in the conference with Eastern Oregon who the Saints defeated 2-1 in OT a week ago. In the last two weeks the Saints played the other three to teams in Cascade.

"This was a very tough stretch," Thorvilson said. "We played the top three teams in the conference and although you want to go 3-0, going 2-1 is a good result. The conference season is long but we started 5-1 and that is exciting."

Carroll plays again at home on Oct. 7th at 2 p.m. against non-conference opponent Trinity Lutheran College.  Trinity Lutheran is 3-7-1 after losing to Western Washington University on Saturday.
