Saints Sweep UMW, Host No.6 Rocky Saturday

DILLON, Mont. – Carroll College volleyball swept Montana Western to move to 6-0 in Frontier Conference play and win their 12th out of 13 matches.

"It is a great win considering last year we were in a similar situation and went down there and dropped one," head coach Moe Boyle said. "That was the message before the match, we needed to take care of business and we did just that."

The Saints topp UMW 25-19, 25-22, 25-18. Crystal Schmidt had 11 kills and a .556 hitting percentage to lead the Saints to the win.  Jonni Dorr had 23 assists to pace the Carroll offense and Rebecca Sweeney anchored Carroll backline with 21digs.

"Crystal has been playing well and I think confidence continues to grow as defense picks up balls that get past and setters give lots of opportunities to succeed," Boyle said. "Becca Sweeney was phenomenal on defense. She's just a rock in the back row. It was a very important match for us to make sure that we're still on point heading into the second half of the conference season."

The Saints held UMW to a .030 hitting percentage but the Bulldogs recorded 65 digs on the match which kept them in the competition.

"They make it tough on you, they are scrappy and get a lot of balls up," Boyle said. "Thankfully we did what we didn't do last ear and didn't get ahead of ourselves."

The Saints return to Helena for a match with No. 6 Rocky Mountain Saturday afternoon. Both teams are 6-0 in conference and the Saints will need to play a nearly perfect game if they want to upend the returning conference champions.

"Tomorrow our game plan is to go out and play our game," Boyle said. "We need to focus on every ball, try to maintain our own jobs, one point at a time and see how the match plays out. We are going to have to limit our errors significantly."

The Saints and Bears take the court at the PE Center at 2 p.m.
