Alex joined the Carroll coaching staff in the spring of 2015 after a stellar career as the starting center for the Saints.

In 2016, Kastens moved from the offensive line to the defensive line and this season takes over as the strength and conditioning coach.

In 2017, the Saints defense were the top team in total defense and rushing defense and second in scoring defense. Defensive end Alec Basterechia was named First-Team All-Conference. In 2016, two of his players, Kyle Smith and Beaugh Meyer were named to the Frontier All-Conference Second-Team. He recruits North Idaho and Washington.

Kastens was a two-year team captain, a three-year starter at center and once the Lifter of the Year for the Saints. In each of the 2013 and 2014 seasons he was named First-Team All-Conference and Academic All-Conference in 2014. He graduated in the spring of 2015 from Carroll College with a degree in History and Political Science.
