Saints Sweep Comets to Start Marathon Week on the Road

MAYVILLE, N.D. - The Carroll College Volleyball team kicked-off a big week on the road with a three-set sweep of Mayville State on a rare Monday evening at the Lewy Lee Fieldhouse.

Beginning a stretch of four games in five days, the Fighting Saints (10-3, 5-1) made quick work of the Comets (0-12, 0-7) as they look to stack wins and stay near the top of the Frontier Conference standings.

Coming off a full week of rest, Carroll was on fire to open Monday's match. The Saints began the night on a 12-4 run featuring multiple kills by both Birdie Heuiser (Helena, Mont. / SO) and McKaila Balcom (Pasco, Wash. / SR). The Comets would make a late push, but Carroll had done enough work in the early stages of the frame to hold off the comeback and take set one 25-22.

The second set was a completely different story. The Saints got off to an abnormally slow start, with Mayville State racing out to an 11-3 advantage. Not phased, Carroll responded. Led by kills from Birdie Heusier, Kendall Denny (Fairfield, Wash. / R-FR), and Alli Devine (Wasilla, Alaska / SO), the Saints battled back to even the frame up at 13-13. Heuiser proceeded to put down kills on four of the last five Carroll points, as the Saints would escape with a 25-23 second set win to go up 2-0 in the match.

The third set was never in question, as Carroll put together four separate runs of three or more points, while also hitting a match-high .242 as a team. The Saints left little room for the Comets to operate, and ran away with a 25-14 set win to take the match in straight sets.

While Birdie Heuiser led all players with 12 kills on the evening, her older sister Lauren Heuiser (Helena, Mont. / SR) was nearly as effective. Lauren was the lone other player to record double-digit kills on the night, finishing with 10.

Jansyn Carrizales (Sunnyside, Wash. / SR) led all players with 17 assists, while Sofia Kimmel (Bozeman, Mont. / SO) tallied a game-high 17 digs to round-out the statistical leaders.

Carroll will move on to the second-leg of the marathon week tomorrow, taking on Valley City State at 5 p.m. (MDT).
