Carroll Drops Pair at Mayville State

PORTLAND, N.D. - The Carroll College Softball team fell in both games of a conference doubleheader against Mayville State, dropping a tightly contested opener 2-1 before falling 11-3 in the nightcap.

Game One - Mayville State 2, Carroll 1

Mayville State took control early in the first game and held off Carroll's best chance in the opener, holding on for a 2-1 win in Sunday's first game.

Game 1 turned on a pair of fifth-inning swings after both teams traded quiet innings behind efficient starting pitching. Mayville State went ahead 1-0 in the first and that score held until the Fighting Saints broke through in the top of the fifth. Kati Slater (Yamhill, Ore. / SR) sparked that rally with a double to left, one of Carroll's three doubles in the game, and Brynn Notbohm (Miles City, Mont. / SO) later scored the tying run on a fielder's choice. The tie lasted only until the bottom half of the inning, however, as the Comets lifted a sacrifice fly to left that scored the go-ahead run.

Carroll matched Mayville State with five hits in the opener and did not commit an error, but the Fighting Saints left five runners on base and could not generate another scoring chance late. Kathryn Emmert (Helena, Mont. / SO) kept Carroll in the game throughout, working six innings and allowing two runs while striking out three.

Game Two - Mayville State 11, Carroll 3 (6 Innings)

The second game broke open quickly. Mayville State scored four times in the first inning. Ryanne Bass delivered the decisive blow of the day, a three-run homer that pushed the lead to 4-0 before Carroll recorded an answer.

The Saints responded in the second with two runs, one on a bases-loaded walk, and the second on a fielder's choice, trimming the margin to 4-2, but Mayville State answered immediately with two more in the bottom of the inning.

Mayville State kept adding on from there, scoring once in the third, once in the fifth and three more in the sixth to end it at 11-3.

Carroll managed five hits in the loss, with Slater again producing one of the Saints' biggest swings, driving in two runs on a double in the sixth, but Mayville State's 12-hit attack kept the pressure on throughout.

The teams will wrap up the 2026 regular season tomorrow afternoon, finishing their four-game series with another doubleheader that will go a long ways towards deciding the seeding for the upcoming Frontier Conference Championship later this week.
