TUCSON, Ariz. - The Carroll College Softball team wrapped up their week in the desert with a Wednesday afternoon split, beating Viterbo 4-3 before falling 8-0 to Indiana Tech in six innings at the Lincoln Park fields.
GAME ONE: Carroll 4, Viterbo 3
The Fighting Saints (5-5) picked up their second win of the week over the V-Hawks, holding on for a tight one-run win thanks in large part to an outstanding all-around performance from
Brooke Thompson (Billings, Mont. / JR).
Kathryn Emmert (Helena, Mont. / SO) got the first start of her young Carroll career, pitching three shutout innings with a pair of strikeouts and only two hits surrendered, but
Brooke Thompson would record the win with her four inning relief effort.
The junior transfer came on to pitch in the top of the fourth, forcing a pair of ground-outs and a strike out, then did herself a favor in the bottom half of the frame. Thompson put the Saints on the scoreboard with her second homer of the season, and second in as many games. The two-run blast brought home
Tayelynn Puyleart (Meridian, Idaho / FR), who doubled to center earlier in the frame.
The Saints put togehter a two out rally in the bottom of the fifth, with
Riley Simone (Cody, Wyo. / SO) driving in one run on a liner up the middle. The sophomore then stole second, and was brought home with an RBI double by Puyleart to double the Saints' advantage at 4-0 heading into the sixth.
In the bottom of the sixth Viterbo made a late charge. A one-out double by Alexis Watson halved the lead, and following a steal of third, Watson was scored on a sacrifice bunt to pull within one.
A pitch on the leadoff hitter in the top of the seventh got away from Thompson, putting the tying run on base, but Carroll would close out the 4-3 win with a 4-3 double play.
Puyleart was the lone Saint to record multiple hits, finishing 2-3 with an RBI, while five other Saints recorded one hit in the win (Simone, Thompson, Sayers, Seaman, Labrum).
GAME TWO: Indiana Tech 8, Carroll 0 (Six Innings)
Things didn't go as smoothly for Carroll in the tournament finale, as the Saints combined for just three hits in an 8-0 run rule loss to Indiana Tech in six frames.
The Warriors got on top early, with an RBI double in the second. Mirroring singles through both sides of the infield in the third inning to extend the lead to three.
All said and done, Indiana Tech tallied 12 hits in the win, scoring in each of the final three innings, including a pair of runs in both the fourth and the decicding sixth frame.
Sammie Labrum (Kalispell, Mont. / SR) was the lone bright spot at the plate, finishing her afternoon 2-3, while Simone added the lone other Carroll hit in the loss that dropped the Saints back to .500 entering conference play.
Carroll will now shift focus towards the inaugural Frontier Conference regular season, where they will look to win the eight-team league's first championship. The Saints will start conference play on the road, heading to Bismarck State for a four game series March 20-21.
