CALDWELL, Idaho - The Carroll Softball team wrapped up their opening weekend with a pair of non-conference losses, as they fell 10-2 and 6-0 to Preseason No. 3 Eastern Oregon on neutral ground at Symms Field, home of the College of Idaho.
GAME ONE: Carroll 2, Eastern Oregon 10 (Five Innings)
Kennedy Venner (Billings, Mont. / SR) got her second start in as many days, coming off a win in the season-opener yesterday morning, but couldn't replicate her Friday shutout as the Mounties tagged her for five earned on four hits over two innings of work.
Taylor Sayers (Helena, Mont. / SO) got the scoring started for the Saints early, with a productive RBI groundout in the top half of the first to put Carroll on top 1-0.
A walk, hit batter, and pair of singles for the Mounties in the bottom of the first would lead to a lead change, as the Mounties hung three on the board in the frame.
Things went sideways in the home half of the third inning, as the '25 CCC Tournament Champions put up five runs off of three different Carroll pitchers (Venner, Emmert, Depaoli). Nothing went Carroll's way in the frame, as errors, walks, and hard contact at the plate from the Mounties gave EOU an 8-1 lead heading into the fourth.
Eastern added a pair of runs in the fourth, putting the pressure on the Saints to extend the game with three runs needed in the fifth. Eastern's second error of the day led to one more run for the Saints in the top half of the fifth, but that would be all the closer Carroll would get as EOU closed out the run-rule win.
GAME TWO: Carroll 0, Eastern Oregon 6
The Saints got blanked in game No. 2 of the evening, as the bats went ice cold.
After starting the year with four or more hits in each of their first three games, the Saints could only muster a pair of base knocks in a shutout loss in the nightcap.
Brooke Thompson (Billings, Mont. / JR) broke up the no-hit bid in the top of the fifth with a single up the middle, and
Kati Slater (Yamhill, Ore. / SR) singled to left in the sixth for the lone two hits for the Saints.
A grand slam in the bottom of the third inning was the back-breaker in the loss off the bat of Eastern's Hope Burke, while the Mountaineers also added a pair of runs on RBI singles in the second and fifth.
The Saints will have a weekend off, as they return to Helena for more early season work ahead of a week-long trip to Tucson, Ariz. in early March where they will wrap up the non-conference portion of their schedule at the Tucson Invitational Games.
