HELENA, Mont. - A hearty purple-clad Homecoming crowd was treated to a historic performance on Saturday evening, as the No. 13-ranked Carroll Football team scored 73 points while holding Arizona Christian scoreless on Valley Bank Field at Nelson Stadium.
The 73-point shutout is the single largest margin of victory in a shutout since the Fighting Saints (4-1, 1-0) joined the Frontier Conference in the mid-1930's, and their most points scored in any Frontier Conference game since a 69-12 win over College of Idaho in 2014.
Carroll controlled every aspect of the stat sheet in the lopsided victory and the Saints once again saw outstanding contributions in all three phases - Offense, Defense, and Special Teams in a game that saw many younger players shine when called upon all night long.
Offensively, three different Carroll Quarterbacks completed passes, with nine different Saints catching at least one pass, while 12 different players recorded at least one rush in the win.Â
The Saints put up 478 yards of total offense, including 178 yards on the ground and 309 yards through the air on just 13 total completions.Â
Appearing in only the first half,
Kaden Huot (Helena, Mont. / SR) completed eight of his 12 attempts for 210 yards and two touchdowns, while
Hogan Carmichael (Bend, Ore. / R-JR) and
Conner Willis (Twin Falls, Idaho / R-SO) combined to go 5-6 through the air for another 99 yards.
On the ground,
Peter Minnaert (Boise, Idaho / JR) scored a career-high three rushing touchdowns, including a 21-yard burst, to lead all players with 66 rushing yards on just eight carries. A pair of redshirt freshmen,
Beau Butner (Spokane Valley, Wash.) and
Brody Boness (Ritzville, Wash.) combined for 85 more yards, and two more scores on the ground.
Out-wide,
Treyton Graham (Dillon, Mont. / R-JR) enjoyed his best game as a Saint, leading all players in both receptions (3) and receiving yards (70).Â
Saturday was a day to remember for the Carroll tight end room, as Matt Golik (Lewistown, Mont. / R-JR),
Tanner Larson (Kennewick, Wash. / R-FR), and
Josh Hoffman (Clarkston, Wash. / R-FR) all came down with receiving touchdowns - including the first career TD receptions for both Golik and Hoffman.
The Offense was only on the field for 27 minutes in the win, continually set up with excellent field position thanks to the efforts of the Carroll Defense.
Entering the week, the Saints were ranked No. 20 in the NAIA in total defense, holding their opponents to just 283 yards per game. That number dropped significantly on Saturday, as Carroll held ACU to just 78 total yards and only five first downs - never allowing the Firestorm to advance past the Carroll 40-yard line all night.
The shutout saw 31 different Saints record at least one defensive stat, with plenty of underclassmen getting valuable on-field reps and shining while doing so.
Nolan Gallagher (Palmer, Alaska / R-SO) led Carroll with six tackles on the night, including 3.0 TFL, a pair of sacks, and one forced fumble.
Billy Corette (Frenchtown, Mont. / R-FR),
Jett Boyce (Lewistown, Mont. / R-JR), and
Bridger Fleming (St. Geroge, Utah / R-SO) each added five tackles as well.
Takeaways have been key to Carroll's success in recent weeks, and Saturday was no exception.
Kolbe Coey (Boise, Idaho / R-FR) just continues to make plays. The safety scored yet another non-offensive touchdown for the Saints in the first quarter, scooping and scoring a bad snap on a Firestorm punt attempt. Meanwhile, a pair of defensive backs grabbed their first interceptions as Saints later in the the game in
Johnny Miller (Lake Oswego, Ore. / R-SR), and
Marques Dorsey (San Tan Valley, Ariz. / R-FR).
Kai Golan (Columbia Falls, Mont. / R-SO) sent all but one of his 12 kick-off attempts into the endzone for touchbacks, while
Eddie Ballanco (Bozeman, Mont. / FR) had one of the best kicking night's in Carroll history. Ballanco was a perfect 10-10 on PAT attempts, while also drilling the second field goal of his career, a 48-yard blast that matches the second-longest in the NAIA this season.
Carroll scored 31 points in the opening quarter of the Homecoming blowout. All three of Minnaert's career-high rushing touchdowns came on successive drives to open the game, chewing up just six total minutes of the game clock. Coey's fumble recovery for a touchdown gave the Saints a 28-0 lead with 2:28 remaining in the frame, while Ballanco's big blast extended the lead to 31 just two minutes later.
Beau Butner's first career touchdown came just minutes into the second, as the speedy back took a direct snap and raced down the far sideline for a 34-yard touchdown - the second-longest by any Saint running back this season. Matt Golik's first career touchdown came midway into the frame, taking a screen pass nearly the exact route that Butner did earlier in the quarter.Â
Tanner Larson scored for the second-straight week, pulling-in a 14-yard pass from Huot on the first play after the two minute warning to help give Carroll a 52-0 lead at the break.Â
Carroll outgained the Firestorm 311 yards to one in the first half, and the second half belonged solely to the the second and third-stringers.
A trio of scores came after the break for the Saints, and all three were the first career-touchdowns for each respective player.
Trey Graham and
Conner Willis double-dipped on their first collegiate scores, while Graham had several impressive grabs over the course of the night, Willis will remember their third quarter connection fondly. The redshirt-sophomore out of Twin Falls hit Graham from 32-yards out for both his first career completion and touchdown.
Brody Boness was highly effective in his lone drive of the night, gaining 34 yards on just three carries - the third of which saw him plow into the endzone from three-yards out.
The final score of the night marked both the first career reception and touchdown for
Josh Hoffman, as Willis finished the night 2-2 for 47 yards and two touchdowns.
Since a week two Bye, Carroll has outscored their opponents 160-20 - looking sharper and sharper each week.
The Saints will now turn their attention towards next Saturday, as they host (RV) Montana Western at 1 p.m. in Helena.
