HELENA, Mont. - The Carroll College Men's Basketball team nearly went coast-to-cost on Friday night, trailing for only 24 seconds of their lopsided 88-66 win over Mayville State at the CC PE Center.
Unlike last Friday's thriller against Dakota State, the Fighting Saints (11-4, 9-1) left no doubts against the Comets, as they rolled to a 22-point win in their gold alternate City uniforms.
A Saint known for his defense,
Kellen Harrison (Bozeman, Mont. / SO) was the X factor on both ends of the court. The standout sophomore put together one of the most impressive stat lines in recent memory, making play-after-play on both ends of the court. Harrison had a career-night, scoring 31 points on a 13-17 effort from the floor, while adding team-highs in both assists (6) and steals (4).
Put into perspective, Harrison's 31 points matched the combined total of the two next highest-scoring Saints [
Isaac Round (Northampton, England / SO) 16 points,
Isaiah Crane (Portland, Ore. / R-SO) 15 points].
Shots fell early and often for the Saints in the first half, as they built a 25-point advantage following a first frame effort that saw the team shoot 55 percent from the field (22-40) and 44 percent from beyond the arc (8-18) while only attempting a pair of free throws.
The Carroll lead would balloon to as large as 32 points in the second half, but an extended rough patch offensively saw Mayville State chip away at the lead. The Comets put together a 20-6 run from the 15-minute mark to the six-minute mark before Carroll's offensive rhythm came back, as they closed out the one-sided win.
12 different Saints saw action on Friday, with eleven different players recording at least one rebound. As a team, Carroll finished with 37 boards, their second-most this season (47 at Dickinson State - Nov. 21)
Dean Blair (Great Falls, Mont. / FR) saw his first collegiate action in the victory, pulling down five rebounds while adding two points, an assist and a steal in his 17 minutes.
Nate Christy (Spokane, Wash. / FR) led the Saints with seven rebounds on the night, also adding six points, one block and a steal.
The Saints will look to win the weekend, as they turn around and host Valley City State tomorrow evening at 7 p.m. at the PE Center.
