Box Score HELENA, Mont. - Behind their most impressive defensive effort of the season, the No. 24-ranked Carroll Women's Basketball team coasted to an 81-36 win over Mayville State on Friday night at the CC PE Center.
While scoring a season-high 81 points is nothing to scoff at, the Fighting Saints (10-6, 8-2) stifling defense was the story of the night. Carroll finished the night with a new program record 24 team steals, and held the Comets to a meager 24.4 percent from the floor (10-41).
The pressure from the Saints started right from the opening tip, as they began the game on a 10-0 run, forcing seven straight Mayville State turnovers over the opening five minutes.
Meagan Karstetter (Moses Lake, Wash. / SR) scored six points and Carroll led 16-5 after one.
The Comets found some momentum offensively in the second quarter, but couldn't slow down the Saints on the defensive end. Eight different players scored for Carroll in the frame, as the 25-point explosion gave them a 41-19 lead at the break.
Carroll allowed only one field goal in the third quarter, again holding Mayville State to just five points in the quarter for the second time on the night. They extended their lead even further behind a balanced offensive effort, shooting 53 percent in the frame.
Ava Oakland (Boise, Idaho / SR) scored nine of her career-best 13 points in the fourth, and Carroll closed out the impressive effort for their fifth-straight Frontier win, 81-36.
All said and done, the Saints forced 35 MSU turnovers, while taking care of the ball on their end with just 11.
Ten different Saints recorded four or more points in the victory.
Oakland led all players with her game-high 13 points, three rebounds, and pair of assists.
Willa Albrecht (Billings, Mont. / R-SR) finished with 12 points, three assists and a pair of steals.
Kennedi Niemann (Cody, Wyo / R-SO) and
Kenzie Allen (Grantsville, Utah / JR) each scored ten points, and combined for nine steals on the night (Niemann 5, Allen 4).
Gracie Millimen (Manhattan, Mont. / R-FR) came away with a team-high seven rebounds.
The Saints will put their five-game Frontier streak on the line tomorrow night, hosting Valley City State at 5 p.m. in the PE Center.
