HELENA, Mont. - The first match of a new-look 22-game Frontier Conference slate couldn't have gone any better for (RV) Carroll College, as they put forth a dominating effort in a quick three set sweep over Rocky Mountain College on Wednesday evening the PE Center.
Few things beat the feeling of your first game of the season in front of your home crowd, and the Fighting Saints (6-3, 1-0) kept their purple-clad fans entertained and excited all evening long in 3-0 drubbing of the Battlin' Bears (0-5, 0-1).
"Such a tremendous team effort." said Head Coach Moe Boyle "From our hyped-up bench, to the chemistry on the court, and our awesome fans - tonight was a
team effort."
The Saints were met with little resistance in the early stages of the conference-opening match, with their potent offensive attack firing on all cylinders.
In a dominant opening frame, Carroll hit .364 while the Bears struggled mightily, hitting a meager -.028. Five different Saints registered kills in the opening set, highlighted by six kills from
McKaila Balcom (Pasco, Wash. / JR) in the middle portion of the frame to help build a lead that Rocky couldn't cut into, as Carroll rolled to a 25-14 win.
As dominant as the first set was, the Saints found a way to one-up it in the second. Carroll rattled-off 10-straight points to begin the frame before the Bears would light up their side of the scoreboard. More excellent play at the net, paired with multiple service aces from
Jansyn Carrizales (Sunnyside, Wash. / JR) would see Carroll run away with a 25-11 second set win.
Rocky finally woke up in the third frame, putting together the most competitive set of the night. Carroll again built a large early lead at 10-3, but the Bears would go on a 15-7 run to grab their first lead of the evening at 18-17. All three Heuiser sisters (Birdie, Lauren, Elizabeth) would help put the Saints over the top however, with critical late game kills to put the game at bay with a 25-23 clinching set victory.
Elizabeth Heuiser (Helena, Mont. / R-SR) was the best all-around player on the court, leading the Saints in both kills (12) and blocks (5.0), while Carrizales posted game-highs in aces (3) and assists (21).
McKaila Balcom was not far behind Heuiser in the stat sheet, finishing her stellar performance with 10 kills and 3.0 blocks, and
Molly O'Connor (Bozeman, Mont. / SR) controlling the back line with a team-high 23 digs.
"...McKaila and Liz provided the majority of our kills tonight and they moved it around very well.
Birdie Heuiser had some serious spice on a few of her kills tonight, and that will definitely make her want more this weekend."
Heuiser and the Saints will have plenty of opportunity to build off the big win, as they still have a pair of games remaining over the next three days. On Friday night, No. 5-ranked Providence will come to town for a 7 p.m. showdown, before Carroll wraps up a busy first week against MSU-Northern at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
