GREAT FALLS, Mont. - The No. 19-ranked Carroll Women's Basketball team saw their four-game win streak come to a close as they fell 48-35 to No. 25 Providence at the McLaughlin Center on Thursday evening.
The Fighting Saints ( 17-8, 9-3) had their worst shooting night of the season, shooting a dismal 26 percent from the floor in a 48-35 loss to the Argonauts (17-7, 6-6).
Baskets were easy to come by in the early minutes for both sides, as the Saints trailed a tightly contested first five minutes 10-8. Providence continued to get into the paint for the remainder of the frame, ending the quarter on a 10-2 run over the final five minutes.
Kyndall Keller (Havre, Mont. / R-SR) and
Willa Albrecht (Billings, Mont. / R-JR) combined for Carroll's 10 points in the frame, but the Saints would enter the second quarter down 20-10 as the Argos went 9-12 (75 percent) from the floor in the opener.
The second quarter was disastrous for the Saints. Carroll went 0-10 from the floor as a team, with their only two points of the frame coming on a pair of free throws from
Alex Bullock (Helena, Mont. / R-FR). The scoreless effort from the field, paired with five turnovers allowed Providence to stretch their lead to 31-12 heading into the halftime break.
While struggling on the offensive end of the court, Carroll tightened the clamps defensively each quarter. The Saints entered the week at No. 9 in the NAIA in points allowed per game (54.7 ppg), and still managed to lower that figure even in the lopsided loss.
Carroll simply couldn't string together scores and stops in the third quarter. They held the Argos to just 10 points, but went just 3-12 from the floor in the frame and couldn't make up any ground.
Keller added eight points in the fourth quarter, trying to bring Carroll back within reach of the unlikely comeback bid, but the effort would come up well short as Providence walked out with the 48-35 win.
Keller's 12 points led the Saints in the loss, with Albrecht adding another 10.Â
Isabelle Erickson (Broadview, Mont. / R-JR) pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds.
After struggling in the first two meetings of the season, Providence's Ashlee Maldonado had a big game, leading all players with 16 points.
The 26 percent effort from the floor (13-50 FG) was the lowest for the Saints since 2020 (Jan. 29, 2020, 43-39 Loss at Rocky).
The Saints will look to wipe the slate clean tomorrow as they prepare for a Senior Day matchup on Saturday, hosting Montana Tech at 2 p.m. in the PE Center.
