BUTTE, Mont. - Regulation wasn't enough to decide Saturday night's rivalry game in Butte, as
Drew Jones' drive and score with just seconds remaining lifted the Carroll Men's Basketball team to a 95-93 overtime win at No. 4 Montana Tech for their second ranked victory in as many days.
For the first time since 2018, the Fighting Saints (6-1, 5-0) found a way to win in Butte. While it didn't come easy, the two-point overtime victory also marked the second-straight win in the series with the Orediggers (8-3, 2-3).
While the OT win was a true team effort, it was
Drew Jones (Puyallup, Wash. / FR) who provided the fireworks at the end. The true freshman capped his career night with a fearless drive and tough finish at the rim with less than three seconds left in overtime to put a bow on the first Carroll win in Silverbow County in seven years.
Jones, who's been stellar off the bench in recent weeks, finished with a career-high 21 points, going 5-7 from the floor, 2-3 from range, and 9-11 at the stripe.
Carroll found themselves down by seven at the halftime break, shooting below their season average over the first 20 minutes (44 percent).
Isaiah Crane (Portland, Ore. / R-SO) got off to a good start, leading the Saints with 11 points in the opening frame, but Carroll still trailed thanks to a 21-9 rebounding edge for the Orediggers and 16 first half points from Karson Peffer.
The Saints made adjustments at the break, out-rebounding Tech 15-14 in the second half, while the offensive output picked up as well. Jones scored 12 of his 21 points in the second frame, while another pair of guards in Crane and Harrison combined for 17.
With 7:30 remaining and trailing by four, a foul on a three-point attempt by
Kellen Harrison (Bozeman, Mont. / SO) and a technical foul away from the play on the Orediggers would give Carroll a big swing. The Saints knocked down all five free throws, taking the lead for the first time since the opening two minutes.
Just one minute later, another shooting foul and technical foul would send Carroll right back to the stripe where they would extend their lead out to six.
With two minutes left in regulation the score was tied at 80-80. A pair of layups were exchanged on either side, and both teams would have an opportunity to go find a win. With just seven seconds left, Carroll would turn the ball over while trying to set up a game-winning drive. On the other end, Tech's last second shot wouldn't go down and the game went into overtime.
In overtime, Carroll's offensive efficiency was the deciding factor. The Saints were a perfect 3-3 from the floor, and knocked down seven of their eight free throw attempts. Tech went just 4-7 from the field and 2-5 at the line.
Crane led the Saints with a 22-point night, fouling out with five boards and three assists as well.Â
Harrison was once again a pest on the defensive end, coming away with a game-high four steals and 18 points.Â
Isaac Round (Northampton, England / SO) had a good night, scoring 12Â points and leading the Saints with eight rebounds, while
Nate Christy (Spokane, Wash. / FR) added 12 points.
The Saints sit atop the Frontier Conference standings with a perfect 5-0 mark for the first time since 2019-20, and will look to win their first six conference games of the year for the first time since the NAIA started recording online statistics in 2004. They'll look to sweep the season series with both Dickinson State and Bismarck State next weekend in Helena.
