HELENA, Mont. - The calendar has flipped to December, and the Frontier Conference slate rolls on for the Carroll Basketball teams this weekend as they take on traditional rivals in a pair of doubleheaders against Montana Western on Friday and Montana Tech on Saturday.
The Fighting Saints will look to continue their strong starts on both sides of the action, hoping to get a leg up on a pair of Montana schools in the young Frontier season.
On the Women's side of the action, the Saints are still No. 16 in the nation, and are coming off a 1-1 week against a pair of ranked opponents last weekend in Helena at the Thanksgiving Classic. Carroll knocked-off No. 10 Lewis-Clark State on Friday evening, then dropped a physical contest to No. 21 Oregon Tech on Saturday.
Always a strong defensive team, the Saints are right on pace with recent seasons. Through seven games, Carroll is once again holding opponents under 60 points per game (58.7 ppg) as they have every season since 2014.Â
Shooting has been the story of success for the Saints this season, as they are 4-1 on the year when shooting 40 percent or better - the lone loss coming in their most recent game against Oregon Tech last week.
Willa Albrecht (Billings, Mont. / R-SR) has been outstanding, averaging over 18 points per game through the first seven games.
The Carroll Men have enjoyed a multi-week break in the action, with their most recent games coming two weeks ago in North Dakota - a pair of wins over Dickinson State and Bismarck State.
Kellen Harrison (Bozeman, Mont. / SO) earned Frontier Conference Defensive Player of the Week honors after a pair of stellar defensive efforts, while
Lorence Dela Cruz (Winnipeg, Manitoba / SR) had an equally strong case for the honor with a career-high eight steal performance against Bismarck State.
Following a setback against then-ranked No. 1 College of Idaho, the Saints finished November strong with three-straight wins in which they've shot 48 percent or better as a team.
Friday's doubleheader in Dillon will see the Women start at 5 p.m. and the Men follow at 7 p.m., while Saturday's showdowns in Butte will start at 5:30 p.m., and 7:30 p.m.
