DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The No. 24-ranked Carroll Women's Basketball team fell to Rochester Christian (Mich.) in a 62-60 overtime loss in the first game of the Daytona Beach Shootout on Wednesday afternoon at the Ocean Center.
After leading for nearly the entirety of the tournament opener, the Fighting Saints (7-5, 5-2) saw a prime opportunity for a non-conference win slip through their fingers, eventually falling in a tight overtime loss to the Warriors.
Leading by 10 points with just four minutes remaining, the Carroll offense went stagnant - and the Warriors found their footing.
Led by
Willa Albrecht's (Billings, Mont. / R-SR) 21-point effort, including a 12-13 outing from the free throw line, the Saints were right on the cusp of closing out a solid win, however, three missed three-pointers and five turnovers over the final four minutes would allow Rochester Christian to sneak back into contention. Following a game-tying layup with just under three seconds remaining, Carroll found themselves with an opportunity to put up one final game-winning attempt, but couldn't get a shot off as the game rolled into overtime.
Several early misses and a converted and-one opportunity for the Warriors in the early stages of overtime would put the Saints in catch-up mode for the first time since the 8:38 mark of the game's opening quarter. The Saints couldn't get shots to fall with consistency in the overtime period, as they went 2-9 from the floor with the lone makes coming from a pair of
Ava Oakland (Boise, Idaho / SR) and
Meagan Karstetter (Moses Lake, Wash. / SR) three-pointers - leading to the two-point loss, 62-60.
The game will feel like a missed opportunity for Carroll, as continued shooting struggles and late turnovers were the achilles heel for the Saints on Wednesday, as the team went just 21-69 from the floor (30 percent) while matching their season-high in turnovers (21).
Albrecht led all players with 21 points and six rebounds. Karstetter was the lone other Saint to score in double figures, finishing with 10 points and five boards, while
Kenzie Allen (Grantsville, Utah / JR) scored nine points on a 3-6 effort from beyond the arc.
The Saints will look to rebound tomorrow afternoon, as they take on (RV) William Carey tomorrow at 1 p.m. to wrap up their week in Florida.
