HELENA, Mont. - The Carroll College Women's Soccer team fell 3-1 in a Thursday evening bout with Eastern Oregon on Valley Bank Field at Nelson Stadium.
The Fighting Saints (3-3-4, 1-3-2) simply didn't have the answers for the Mountaineers' (8-3-1, 5-1-0) attack on Thursday, as Eastern Oregon's second half surge kept them near the top of the CCC standings.
Eastern Oregon struck first with a goal late in the opening half at the 38 minute mark, as Gracie Rainsberry converted on a free kick from just outside of the box to give the Mounties a 1-0 lead at the break.
EOU added two more after halftime to build a 3-0 advantage, including Rainsberry's second goal of the evening in the 55th minute, and a Holly Dorhauer goal in the 76th minute.
Carroll broke their scoreless drought late in the second half when Ella Kuenzli (Bigfork, Mont. / SR) scored off an assist from Deanna Lord (Cave Creek, Ariz. / SR) in the 81st minute. The effort was too little, too late, however, with EOU holding steady over the final nine minutes for the 3-1 win.
The Fighting Saints tallied 16 shots in the match, including eight on goal, while the Mountaineers finished with 14 total shots and seven on frame.
Maria Ackerman (Billings, Mont. / JR) recorded four saves in goal for Carroll, while Rylee Schei stopped seven shots for Eastern Oregon.
Carroll will return to action on Saturday, hosting No. 5 College of Idaho at 12 p.m.
